As ever, this year’s shortlisted finalists offer a revealing insight into the wider trends that have been shaping the FMCG industry over the last year. The plant-based foods space is demonstrating a necessary evolution, with a greater focus on replicating the meat and dairy experience, while seeds, grains, vegetables and botanicals continue to add the diversity of offerings in the vegetarian foods arena. Hybrid concepts remain popular, with confectionery and dessert-inspired innovation in particular offering new opportunities for indulgence across a range of categories, and complex flavour profiles going mainstream as the line between sweet, savoury, salty and sour becomes increasingly blurred. Meanwhile sustainability remains the watchword in packaging, with companies looking for new ways to reduce, replace or eliminate packaging materials to mitigate their environmental impact.
