The products shortlisted for the 2021 Gama Innovation Awards once again provide an intriguing glimpse into the future of consumer goods, as well as a shining a light on some of the key trends influencing the industry over the last 12 months. The impact of the pandemic is revealed primarily through a breakout trend for immunity benefits, although wider health and wellness concepts, including plant-based formulations, remain much to the fore: vegetables, but particularly pulses and legumes, reveal themselves to be central to many better-for-you concepts. This is matched by a counter trend for ‘healthy’ meat and dairy as animal-derived products aim to stage a fightback. Meanwhile, ethical claims continue to diversify, as the race for plastic alternatives gathers pace and brands embrace consumers’ wider CSR concerns, especially in relation to climate change.
